It is very important to distinguish the difference between good orthodontic brackets and low quality braces. Many people try to buy braces according to the price with considering the real quality of the brackets. There are many small details that we should consider when we are buying orthodontic braces. We can start looking at the base. There are many different types of bases. The best quality base is called super mesh because you will get a better contact point per square inch. There are other types of bases that are still good. Also, we have many braces that do not have a mesh. Many braces without a mesh do not stay attached to the teeth as long as a good bracket with a good mesh.

Every time a bracket gets unattached the patients treatment is postponed. You dont want to delay the patients treatment by using a poor quality product. The last thing we need to look at is that the brace has to create a perfect seal because, if it is not sealed properly, saliva, food, etc will penetrate the bonding joint thus creating contamination. Having a proper seal will help in fewer bond failures.

Also, another point to look at is the slot of the bracket. Your biggest ally is accuracy. Providing a perfect slot and a good mesh will provide a more efficient treatment. Why? Because, when the walls are not flat and it does not have a good polish the arch wire cannot move freely on the slot and will create more friction as a result this problem. The bracket is creating unnecessary friction that creates more chair time for the patient. Also, this imprecise slot is allowing all the force from the arch wire to move the teeth easily. When the arch wire is moving freely it is using more force from the arch wire providing a faster treatment.

Finally, one last thing to look is the shape and polishing of the surface of the bracket. A good bracket will not have any sharp edges. Make sure you get a bracket with a good polish and a nice shape. This will provide the patient comfort and less irritation.
